The winner of the Young Bird Photographer of the Year competition was also announced. The award ceremony will take place at Birdfair at Rutland Water on Saturday 19 August, where Chris Packham will hand out the well-deserved prizes in the main events marquee at 4. The competition will then open for entries at midnight on this date. There are seven categories to enter; find out more and upload your photos at the competition website. A competition book, published by William Collins, is also available.

The winning entry came from Alejandro Prieto Rojas who triumphed to become Bird Photographer of the Year with his beautifully reflective image of flamingos feeding their chicks in Rio Legartos, Mexico. Other fantastic photographs featured in the competition include a cheeky swan feeding from the bottom of a stream by photographer Ian Wade and a mesmerising shot of a ghostly barn owl swooping through the dark night, pictured by Jamie Hall. The competition is a co-venture between Nature Photographers Ltd and the British Trust for Ornithology aimed at celebrating artistry in bird photography and promoting conservation. With such stiff competition, judging these beautiful images of birds must have been a mammoth task. Winning images are now published in a book which is available from the British Trust for Ornithology and will feature in a travelling exhibition around the UK.
