By mixing too many vehicle types and relying too much on established notions of what a Mini is, rather than what it might be, the last Countryman ultimately failed to carve out a recognisable identity of its own. In the same way that even the most hapless handyman could improve on a room previously decorated by the simple expedient of dropping a live hand grenade into an open tin of paint and retiring to a safe distance, you would justifiably expect this second-generation Mini Countryman to represent a considerable improvement over its predecessor. Because — with a special mention reserved for the cabin's ill-considered central accessories spine, complete with Christmas cracker contents-quality plug-in stuff you really didn't want — that first effort was something of a dog in every department. But Mini admits that, size wise, said predecessor somewhat crouched between segments, so this one is bigger in every department.
Behold the Mega Mini. That said, the original felt sloppy and uncultured at times, its reflexes and ride hampered by its heft. To improve the second-generation version, Mini started with a clean state. Did this fresh start make a difference? The Countryman is an all-new model, and when Mini says all-new, it means it. Compared to the first Countryman, the only carryover is the stylized wheel cap, meaning the platform, engine, transmission, and interior materials are all fresh. The car has grown in size because of this.

The Mini Countryman has always had two jobs. But also for people who had a Mini a real one, a three-door hatch but who then needed to trade up into more space. There are five seats for grown-ups.
